The Exoduster Movement and Its Impact on African Americans
The Exoduster Movement was the first mass migration of former slaves from the South. The people who were a part of the migration headed west to Kansas, Colorado, and Oklahoma.
When slavery ended, the former slaves had to endure a living situation that was not much better than slavery. They lived in an environment where the only employment that was available to them was low-paying jobs which kept them in an impoverished state. They were often victimized by terrorist groups like the Ku Klux Klan.
When the opportunity arose for them to get away from the harsh and cruel environment of the former Confederacy, thousands of them took advantage of it.
This book explores the reasoning behind the movement. It discusses the institution of slavery which put black people at a disadvantage while they were trying to integrate into American society after being in bondage for so many decades.
It goes on to discuss the creation of the settlements established by African Americans and what became of them. This book talks about a large slice of history that is often forgotten.
