
Vally Jean Peterson and her family leave the southern town of Sweetwater after her brother is brutally murdered by an angry mob of white men. Vally was eight years old when the Peterson family moved to New York. New York City is a big change from the small town they had lived in all their lives.
After Vally grows up, the country becomes enmeshed in the Great Depression. She and her family are hard hit by the crisis.
Vally wants to have it all. She wants wealth, a successful singing career, and romance.
